Spenborough's senior athletes gave a good account of themselves in the first athletics meeting of the season at the Princess Mary Stadium on Saturday 7th May. However the step up to division two of the Northern Athletics League will be a challenge and the team finished fifth of the six teams. It was in the field events where the Spenborough athletes preformed well with new members Darren and Fiona Thomas gaining valuable points. Darren won the discus and 'B' shot and came second in the hammer throw. Fiona won the women's shot and placed second in the 'B' hammer and discus throws. Nick Crimmen won the shot putt. Other throwers performing well were Charlotte Bell and Linda North who finished third in the hammer and discus throws respectively. Jake Darby won the 'B' hammer. Preparing for decathlons later in the summer Glenn Aspindle enjoyed a busy afternoon placing second in the pole vault and high jump and third in the javelin and long jump. Jason Newall also had a busy afternoon doing maximum number of events and contributing valuable points for the team. 2016 Spen 20/Bradford 10k report

posted 6 Apr 2016, 03:16 by Spen A.C.   [ updated 6 Apr 2016, 03:17 ]

Spenborough Athletics Club hosted our annual 20 miles road race on Sunday 13th March. Cool sunny weather made ideal and pleasant conditions for the 200 plus runners tackling the hilly course around the Hartshead, Clifton and Robertown areas. Last years winner John Hobbs from the Leeds club Valley Striders was determined to repeat his win and hold on to the Yorkshire 20 mile title that is incorporated into the race. The early climb out of Cleckheaton up to Scholes usually sorts the runners out and here John and Mike Jefferies, also from Valley Striders, broke clear. Jefferies made a determined effort to stay with his team mate Hobbs but the champion proved the stronger and finished in a respectable time of 1 hour 56 mins 56 secs. The Spenborough runners were led home by veteran Martin Hall who was eleventh and first man over 55 years in the excellent time of 2 hours 06 mins and 04 secs. Other Spen runners were Gerrard Skippings in 32nd, John Turpin (45th), Edward Revell (53rd), Tony Bromley (59th), Graham Walsh 93rd, Simon Cragg 99th, Alex Boryslawski 139th and Lewis Bellwood 144th. Graham was first veteran over 65 years in a good time of 2hrs 35mins 16secs. In the women's race Hannah Oldroyd from Saltaire was the winner in a time of 2 hours 12 mins 30 secs. In 9th place and 69th overall was Spenborough's Jenni Muston.

Thanks goes to all of the volunteers who helped to make the event a success. Among the helpers at the end of the race was Spenborough's Joe Sagar who earlier in the morning won the Bradford 10km road race. Joe was first home from nearly 1000 runners in his biggest win to date.

Life Members

At the Spenborough committee meeting on Friday Sheila Bolland, Roy Bain and Marjorie Bain were made life members of Spenborough. All have been members since the early 1980's. Sheila was recognised for her vast contribution to the catering at the club. Sheila is also very good at getting officials from all over the north of England to come to Spenborough when we host or organise meetings. Roy has made a tremendous contribution to transport in the club at one time driving our own bus and now arranging them. Roy was also a long standing chair of the club and is still a pivotal figure especially in negotiations with Kirklees Active Leisure. Marjorie is our long standing secretary whose administration at the club has enabled us to be recognised within the athletics world as well as general sports administration as a safe, competent and well run club. Congratulations to all three.
