The Junior team got their season kicked off this past weekend as the Yorkshire and District Athletics League first meeting was held at our home at the Princess Mary Stadium. With a rearrangement of the league format from last year with Spenborough being moved into a division with teams from the division above last year, we were excited for the challenge to come this season.

We were off to a great start as Olivia Myers in the Under 17 Women’s finished in first place in the Shot Putt whilst throwing a new Personal Best (PB), a first place finish in the Discus and finished with a first place in the Long Jump with a second best distance of the season.

In the Under 17 men, Ethan Williams leapt up to a first place finish in the High Jump with an equal PB, a first place finish with a PB throw in the Shot Putt and rounded of nicely with a first place finish in the Discus on first try in competition. Joe Trevett stormed to a second place finish in the 100m equalling his PB in the process, before going on to try the Long Jump in competition for the first time. Robert Harness earnt a second place finish in the Shot Putt on his first try in competition and backed up with a strong run in the 800m. It was a Season’s Best jump in the Long Jump for Ben Whitaker as he finished in third place and also had a strong run in the 800m.

Millie Rhodes continued her strong form in the sprints, finishing first in both the Under 15 Girls 200m and 300m, with her second quickest time of the year in the 200m and later going on to throw a PB in the Shot Putt for a second place finish. Abi Hildon covered a bit further distance as she finished in second place in the 1,500m with her second quickest time of the year. Poppy Watts jumped into a first place finish in the Long Jump with a PB distance, before a first try at the 75m Hurdles clearing them nicely to finish second and a first try at the 300m finishing fourth. Rosie Hildon was the only one to best Poppy in the Hurdles crossing the line in first place, a fourth place finish at first try in the Long Jump as well as an impressive first try at the 200m. Evie Cook competed for the first time and was like lightening down the 100m straight to finish in third place. Evie was joined in the 100 by Ada Tillotson whose 100m sprint earnt her a new PB time.

It was a day for PB’s for the Under 15 boys stacked them up as they all gained a PB in at least one event! Harry Rogerson started with a PB throw in the Discus to finish first place, before a further first place and a further throw as he threw a PB in the Shot Putt and finished with a PB in the Long Jump. Reece Bridgeman gained a PB with a strong 200m sprint to finish second, another PB came in the 100m with another impressive second place finish, along with a second place finish in the Long Jump. Joel Cousins also earnt himself PB’s in both the 200m and 100m like Reece as well as turning his hand to Shot Putt in a first try in competition. Jack Worsnup finished off the PB collection as he gained a well earnt PB in the 1,500m as well as a first try at the High Jump and finishing fourth.

The Under 13 girls had a notable first fixture as Hannah Whitaker stormed to first place in the 150m, a first place in the 75m in an equal PB time before jumping to an equal PB distance in the Long Jump for a clean sweep of first places. Eva Armitage claimed herself a first place finish in the 800m in her second quickest time of all time, followed by a first place finish in her 75m race in an equal PB time and finished off with a second place finish in the 150m. Lucy Hird cleared the 75m Hurdles in a PB time to finish in first place, an inspired jump to finish second in the Long Jump with a second best distance of the year as well as an equal PB jump in the High Jump to finish in second place. Maria Edwards was determined in the 800m as she finished in third place on her first try at the event. Amaya Brierley joined the team for the first time and leapt to victory in the High Jump and also claiming a first place in the Discus before rounding off with a second place finish in the Hurdles all on first try at the events.

In the Under 13 boys, Kieran Hird showed his strength in the 80m with a PB time and first place finish, it was then another new PB in the 150m as he finished second and finished off with a second place finish in the Long Jump. Noah Bryne had a strong run in the 1,500m to finish with a new PB time in a third place finish. Daniel Antonovs competed for the first time as he joined the team finishing in third place in the 80m sprint, a fourth place finish in the 150m and fourth place in the Long Jump as well.

We had four relay teams who brought the entertainment with their impressive displays, the Under 13 Girls gave us a strong start as the team of Armitage, Whitaker, Edwards and Hird finished strongly to claim first place. The Under 15 girls were not going to be upstaged as the team of Watts, Cook, Tillotson and Rhodes stormed around for a first place finish. The Under 15 boys team wanted a taste of victory for themselves and that’s what they got as the team of Bridgeman, Cousins, Worsnup and Rogerson crossed the line comfortably in first place. The Under 17 Men’s team went for four for four first place finishes and the team of Harness, Whitaker, Williams and Trevett earnt themselves a first place finish.
