West Yorkshire Championships Report

A round up of the West Yorkshire T&F Championships as the Track and Field season for 2024 comes to a close.

The final fixture of the Track and Field season came to a close on Sunday as the West Yorkshire T&F Championships took place. A chance to get a hand on titles and medals. You could tell the fixture was the end of the season as the rain started to roll in for the morning events.

Starting with the Under 11 Girls, where Stella Zurek was electric in the 75m Sprint to finish third place in her heat and achieved a strong 11th place finish overall, a fifth place finish in the Long Jump followed with a Personal Best Jump and rounded off with a seventh place finish in the 600m. Connie Walker also had a determined run in the 600m and the 75m with an admirable 15th and 16th place finish overall, before rounding her season off with her second best throw of the season in the Shot Putt for a 12th place finish.

In the Under 11 Boys, Joshua Myers progressed to the Final of the 75m as a fourth place finish in his heat earnt him the 8th fastest qualifier, finishing the final with a Personal Best time, along with an impressive run in the 600m and jumps in the Long Jump. Raees Mutfee showed his speed in the 75m to finish second in his heat but just missed out on progressing to the final finishing 9th overall, but that didn’t deter him as he went on to run a new Personal Best time in the 600m and had a first attempt at the Shot Putt. Aidan Rhodes gained himself a new PB distance in the Shot Putt to finish 9th overall, before flying through the air in the Long Jump and a determined sprint in the 75m.

Onto the Under 13 Girls where Hannah Whitaker showed a commanding performance to finish second in her 200m heat to progress to the final, in the second heat Eva Armitage finished in third place to also advance to the final. A tightly contested final saw Hannah claim a well earnt third place finish for the Bronze medal , Eva ran a strong race finishing just behind her qualifying time. Hannah later went onto a sixth place finish in the shot Putt and her fourth best jump of the season in the Long Jump. Eva continued her day with a fourth place finish in the 800m in her third fastest time of the season. Lucy Hird finished her season with a Personal Best throw in the Shot Putt, a third place finish in her 75m Hurdles heat for a sixth overall finish and finished with a first attempt at the 800m. Gabi Lauce continued her introduction to the league with a first attempt at the Shot Putt before going on to run a Personal Best time in the 75m Hurdles and finishing 5th overall and also jumping to a new PB and 7th place finish in the Long Jump.

The Under 13 Boys saw Kieran Hird throw to new Personal Best in the Discus, before later achieving a second place finish in the 100m final and gaining the silver medal as well as another medal following in the 75m hurdles as he finished in third place.

Millie Rhodes continued her fine form on the track as she finished second in the Under 15 Girls 100m heats to progress to the final before showing her dominance claiming first place in a PB time in the final and finished her day with a second best distance of the season in the Long Jump. Poppy Nuttman earnt herself a new PB time in the 100m before a first try at the Mile earning a silver medal finish and a second silver medal came in the Shot Putt with a second best distance of the season.

The under 15 boys saw Joel Cousins reach to new heights in the High Jump as a new PB earnt him a third place finish, it was then a new PB in the 200m heats to progress to the final to go on and finish in 6th place, as well as a first attempt at the Discus. George Thompson earnt himself a fourth place finish in the 80m Hurdles, a seventh place finish in the High Jump followed, along with a first attempt in the Discus.

Olivia Myers sprinted to a third place finish in the Under 17 Women’s 100m heats progressing to the final where she improved to a second place finish, it was also a second place finish in the 80m Hurdles for another silver medal, along with a fourth place finish in the Javelin. Abi Lane earnt herself a second place finish in the 100m heats finishing in fourth fastest qualifier but did not end up racing the final. Natasha Quashie tried out the mile race for the first time and set herself a strong Personal Best time.

In the Under 17 Men, William McIntosh sprinted himself into a second place finish in the 200m final earning a silver medal. Seb Barthocha earnt himself a victory and gold medal in the 100m Hurdles with a Personal Best time, it was another gold medal finish in the Long Jump in his second best distance of the season, followed by a third place finish in the Shot Putt. Ethan Williams earnt himself a Gold medal in the Shot Putt before adding another gold in the Hammer Throw with his second best distance of the season and finished his season with a 4th place finish in the Long Jump. It was a Silver medal for Robert Harness in the 100m hurdles before a new PB time and 4th place finish in the 800m before finishing with a 7th place finish in the Shot Putt.

The Under 20 Women saw an equal SB jump in the High Jump secure gold medal position for Estelle Williams, it would then be a third place finish in the 400m final for a bronze medal before completing the set with a silver medal and PB throw in the Javelin. Emily Sharp was back in the swing of things and earned a 5th place finish in the 400m before going on to claim a bronze medal in the Javelin and going on to gain a silver medal in the Shot Putt.

Onto the Senior Women where Soraya Crodden achieved a victory in the 400m final claiming the gold medal, it was then a silver medal in the 100m final as well as a silver medal in the Shot Putt with her second best throw of the season. Summer Haynes earnt herself the silver medal in the High Jump, a second silver came in the 400m final and finished with a 4th place finish in the 100m final.

Finishing with the Senior Men, Kieran O’Brien continued his improvement in the Discus to finish in second place with a new Personal Best distance and silver medal. Glenn Aspindle earnt himself the bronze medal in the discus, before earning a silver medal in the Long Jump. It was two fourth place finishes in the Discus and Long Jump for Jake Darby before he picked up a silver medal in the Hammer Throw.

And just like that, the 2024 Track and Field season comes to a close, what a season it has been for the club and all the athletes, now time for me to give the type writer a rest until the start of the next season!
