The first West Yorkshire cross country league race of the season began in Keighley on Saturday. A great start for the Spenborough club came when Poppy Henson won the under 11 girl's race. Poppy ran at the back of the leading group for the first lap but moved into the lead on the second lap of the course in Cliff park to take a comfortable win. Poppy led other Spen runners Imogen Atkinson (7th), Millie Rhodes (17th), Ruby Lucas (22d), and Erin Hardiman (27th) to a second team place.
The under 11 boy's team of Miles Sharp (17th),Ben Whitaker (28th) and William McIntosh (52nd) placed 7th team. Other young Spenborough athletes enjoying the fine late summer weather were Matthew Dalton who finished 10th in the under 15 boy's race and Daniel Smith who was 28th in the under 17 men's race.
Spenborough's under 13 girls were 4th team and were led in by Isobel Toher (9th), followed by Sophia Fougler (31st), Estelle Williams (36th) and Emily Sharp (39th).
