Team Spen left nothing on the Track (& Field) as they fought to the end on the final fixture of the Senior League season!

A home fixture with the healthiest looking team sheet of the season with it all to play for to try gain our best league finish in years. It had been a hard fought season for the Senior League team with a third place finish at the first fixture, a second place finish at the second and a second place at the third fixture.

The field got the day underway with Megan Ascough getting the first points on the board in the Women’s Shot Putt, getting her third best throw of the season. It was to be another second in the Hammer as well as the Discus where she got a massive PB throw before adding even more points in the Javelin.

The men’s Hammer added even more points to the teams total early on, as Jake Darby threw close to a SB to get a 4th place finish in the A, while Connor Bell had a big improvement on his SB closing in on a PB throw to finish 3rd in the B. The pairing both claimed a 4th place finish in the Shot Putt A & B with more points added by the pair in the discus.

With the track getting underway with a season long success in the women’s 400m Hurdles as Molly Waring picked up yet another victory, with Soraya Crodden also claiming another victory as well in the B. Molly Waring added further points to the tally with a second place in the 100m Hurdles in a PB time, a 2nd place in the 200m.

The women’s sprints showed their power with their results, Isabel White earned a 2nd place finish in the 100m, with Soraya Crodden claimed victory in the B with almost a SB performance. Holly Martin matched Molly in the 200m B race in a closely fought race, as well as almost running a SB in the 100 Non-Scoring. Moving up through the distances, Isabel White ran her second quickest time over the 400m and impressively held off a third place finish. Youngster Estelle Williams joined the team for the first time and moved up distance to the 400m and had an impressive win in the B race, as well as being near a PB time in the 100m Non-Scoring.

As we move to the women’s middle distance, Ellie Holden had a strong run to gain a SB and second place finish. Whilst Summer Haynes knocked off 10 seconds on her SB time and finished 3rd in the B. Summer also gained a third place finish in the 1500m on her first competitive try of the event.

In the men’s sprints, Tyler Cossins ran his second quickest time of the year and matched his PB in the 200m earning valuable points for the team. Also in the 100m, Elliot Hoyland made his Senior League debut and claimed a new PB.

The men’s middle distance saw a powerful victory for Joe Sagar in the 1500m with a big new PB as well as a big new PB in the 800m to finish 2nd. Reinforcing Joe in both races was Ian Ogden who ran well across both distances finishing first in the B 1500m and 3rd in the B 800m. In the 5km, Tom Dart got chance to return to the team and knocked 9 seconds off his PB time and had a well-earned second place finish, with Kevin Ogden also picking up a 2nd in the B race and just outside SB time.

The 110m hurdles was a clean sweep for Spenborough as Glenn Aspindle claimed first place in the A race and Jake Darby claimed the win in the B race also in a SB time.

With all the track results totalled up we were the highest scorers on the Track!

But now onto the field where the good results still continued to come in for Team Spen. The field specialist Glenn Aspindle was up to his usual impressive results with a further win in the Javelin, a 1st place in the B Triple Jump and a third place in the High Jump.

The men’s Long Jump Jake Darby claim yet another SB and 4th place in the A and Elliot Hoyland earnt a 3rd place finish on his first competitive attempt with an impressive result with strong potential to go even further.

Tyler Cossins was the B to Glenn in the High Jump and equalled his PB to finish in 3rd place. Rueben Byfield surpassed Glenn in the Triple Jump to finish 4th and just under 12m going off the 11m board for the first time.

The Women’s field were also causing a nuisance for the other teams as the good results kept pouring in. Molly Waring added further points to the tally with a SB and 3rd place in the Long Jump, backed up with a 3rd place in the High Jump. Estelle Williams built on her early great results with a second place in the Long Jump and earnt a new PB.

It was a PB for Summer Haynes in the High Jump as she secured yet another 1st place finish for the team’s tally of first places. And a second best throw of the season was enough for Soraya Crodden to finish in second place in the b Javelin and close out the field events for the year.

If the performances up to this point weren’t enough, it was full send for Team Spen in the relays. All four relays ran but that is only the start.
The women’s 4x100m of White, Martin, Waring and Crodden were unbeaten through the season so far and it was not to slipped as they crossed the line almost a second in front of second.

The men’s 4x100m was yet again a different set of athletes as Joe Sagar filled in a leg, but filled is not the correct wording as his impressive sprint helped the team of Cossin, Aspindle, Sagar and Darby match the women and cross the line in first place and 1 second in front of second.

The 4x400m teams all ran together and it was yet another victory for the women as the H and triple WWW of Haynes, Willaims, White and Waring successfully got the baton around crossing the lone in first place.

The men’s 4x400m team of Sagar, I.Ogden, K.Ogden and Aspindle had the hard task of chasing down the other teams after two just running the previous relay and one just finishing the 5k before the relays. But the team spirit was there and the team effort matched it as Aspindle received the baton in 3rd place but chased down Bingley in 2nd like a steam train and earnt the team a well-deserved 2nd place finish.

With the day all wrapped up and no more events were to take place, it is only right to thank the wonderful efforts from all of our officials and helpers who made sure this fixture went ahead. Not only with the troubles of the school holidays, but the added factor of the Commonwealth Games being on at the same time, made it tight on the number of officials. But it was a great team effort once again but everyone involved making sure it worked well and the day ran on time.

So with all the teams incredible efforts and the official points added up, we had our best team finish of the season and were the VICTORS! A tremendous effort by all leaves us second place in the division, the best finish for a few years. A well done to every athlete who has been part of the team this season, these results don’t happen without a team effort.
