The final senior league meet of the season gave Team Spen one more chance to give it their all

The last senior league of the season saw the team travel to York on what started as a dull day before the sun decided to greet us in the afternoon.

The track started once again with the 400m Hurdles, Molly Waring got things kicked off with a Season’s Best in the 400m Hurdles and claiming the win which lead the way for Soraya Crodden to also claim a win in her race as well. Molly also claimed a SB in the 100m Hurdles and the 100m before equalling a SB in the High Jump. Soraya’s win in the 400m H was followed by a second place in the 200m and a SB in the Triple Jump. Also in the sprints, Holly Martin’s two impressive runs in the 200m and 400m gained her two third place finishes. In the longer runs, Mia Butler ran a well fought race in the women’s 3,000m while Ellie Holden opted for the shorter 1,500m this time and finished nicely in second place. Mia also went on to throw SB in the Javelin. Ellie jumped in the Long Jump as well as her run and finished off the season to complete a clean run in cm distances jumping x.03m, x.04m and x.05m across the season proving every cm counts. Megan Ascough finished the season with a third in the Hammer and second in the Shot Putt and Discus with a Personal Best in the Discus. Charlotte Bell was not to be outscored and matched Megan’s results with a third in the Hammer as well as second in both the Shot Putt and Discus.

In the men’s track, Tyler Cossins ran strong races in the 100m and 200m to set a new PB in both as well as a PB in the Long Jump. Also in the sprints Jaden Mills almost got himself a SB in the 100m before running a striking race in the 200m. Jude Baldaro joined the senior team for the first time and the youngster ran impressive races in the 400m and 800m and claimed a PB in the 800m. From the younger to the experienced, unretired Kevin Ogden proved the old legs were still turing with SB’s in both the 800m and 1500m. In the 5K, Joe Sagar finished victorious with a SB track time, and was copied by Henry Carter who also finished victorious in his race and ran a track SB time. In the jumps, youngster Ruben Byfield has impressive sets of jumps in both the long and triple jump. Connor Bell shone in the throws with PB throws in both the hot Putt and Discus along with SB’s in the Hammer and Javelin with Jake Darby helping in the throws in the Hammer, Shot and Discus.

The team saw two relay teams with the girls team of Waring, Holden, Martin and Crodden running both the 4x100m and 4x400m and finishing first and second respectively. The men’s team of Ogden, Mills, Cossins and Sagar successfully navigated the baton around in fourth place.

On the weirdest season to date, Team Spen fought the odds and awaiting final results are likely to claim another third place finish overall. A big well done to all athletes who took part in the team over the four fixtures this season. And as always thank you to the wonderful officials and helpers helping to make sure the fixtures went ahead this season with other teams not pulling their weight on the officials end.

Maybe we will see some normality next season or maybe we won’t, but either way I’m sure as a team we can build on this new start we had this season.
