Spen Senior Team battle the Eye of the Storm to finish in second at Match 3 in Hallamshire

The third meeting of the senior league took place at Hallamshire on a day of constantly changing weather. Despite the poor weather, Team Spen’s performance was anything but that.

Glenn Aspindle got the day off to a start with a second place in the Pole Vault, a season's best run earnt him first place in the 110m Hurdles, a joint Season’s Best in the Long Jump to claim third as well as third in the High Jump. James Bell ran a Personal Best time in the 100m as well as jumping a new personal best within the High Jump. Jaden Mills sprinted his way to a SB in the 100m before digging deep in a gruelling 3000m Steeplechase run. Tyler Cossins had an impressive run in the 400m to set a new Personal Best. Thomas Swain joined the team for the first time an two strong runs earned him Pb’s in the 400m and the 800m. Matthew Dalton was another young athlete to join the team and also claim Pb’s, in both the 1,500m and the Long Jump. Getting Pb’s wasn’t just for the youngsters as Ian Ogden ran a PB time in the 800m and a SB in the 1,500m. In the throws, Jake Darby threw a seasons best in the Discus along with good throws in the Hammer and Shot Putt. Connor Bell displayed a great collection of throws in the Hammer, Shot and Discus.

In the Women’s team, Molly Waring claimed victory in the 400m Hurdles and Long Jump, as well as a SB in the 100m and High Jump claiming second place in both along with a second place in the 100m Hurdles. Holly Martin ran a Personal Best in the 400m to achieve third place. Soraya Crodden claimed victory in the 400m Hurdles and a third place in the Triple Jump. Ellie Holden had two impressive runs in the 1,500m and the 3,000m and a SB jump in the Long Jump. Mia Butler showed her might with PB runs in both the 1,500m and the 3,000m. In the female throws, Megan Ascough claimed a set of second places in the Shot, Hammer and Discus. Charlotte Bell re-joined the team claiming victory in the Shot and Discus and a second place finish in the Hammer.

As we moved later into the afternoon the weather worsened and the storms swept in. Heavy rain which flooded the track and the constant presence of Thunder and Lightning led to the rest of the events being cancelled. The 200m, 5000m, Javelin and Relays all ended up getting cancelled.

Though the day was not finished and athletes missed out on competing in events, overall the club did incredibly well and managed to finish in second place. A fantastic effort by all the team, officials and parents/spectators who helped out and hopefully everyone has dried out now after the horrendous rain.
