The 2021 season opener took place at Hull on a chilly dull day but that was not going to stop the return of Team Spen.

Saturday August 10th 2019, the last meeting the Senior Track and Field team competed together. It feels like an eternity ago but we are finally back and boy is it good to be back!

The 2021 season opener took place at the Costello Stadium in Hull on a chilly dull day but that was not going to stop the return of Team Spen.

There was a number of returning athletes to the team, Molly Waring started off with a bang performing excellently in the 400m Hurdles, 100m Hurdles, 100m and 200m as well as the High Jump. Holly Martin showed two strong performances in the 400m and the 100m. Megan Ascough returned to the field with great performances in the Hammer, Shot, Discus and Javelin.

The men’s side also saw a few familiar faces return to the team, Simon Bolland ran two great races in the 1500m and the 800m, along with the man who has now retired from the team more times than cats have lives, Kevin Ogden once again returned and ran two nice races. Tom Dart faced tough conditions in the 3,000m Steeplechase and managed to come out on top. In the 5,000 the conditions were no better but that didn’t stop Joe Sagar from beating the pack to the finish line whilst Henry Carter ran a strong race alongside him. Little Glenn Aspindle once again returned to compete in many events with his usual strong performances in the 110m Hurdles, Long Jump, High Jump and the Javelin. Also in the field, Jake Darby return throwing in the Hammer, Shot Putt and Discus.

The team also had a few new faces from the junior teams, Soraya Crodden made her debut for the team kicking off in style with a win in the 400m Hurdles and backed up with good performances within the 200m and Discus. Another debut within the team was Natalie Groves running a strong race within the 400m and was elated to reach double figures in the Javelin. Ellie Holden joined the team for the first time and covered a lot of ground for the team in the 3,000m and 1,500m running great races in both as well as the good jumps in the Long Jump. Olivia Reah re-joined the team again with a comfortable win in the Triple Jump.

James Bellmade his first appearance for the senior team with impressive runs in both the 400m and 100m, Tyler Cossins also ran a strong race in the 100m on his return to the team as well as a nice run in the 200m. Rueben Byfield joined the team with springs in his shoes jumping new PB’s in both the Long and Triple Jump. Connor Bell once again returned to the field throwing well in all four of the Hammer, Shot, Discus and Javelin. Bayleigh Lawton joined the team for the first time although it wasn’t a good day at the office, I am certain we will see good things to come this season.

Three relay teams ran for Team Spen, the women fielded teams in both 4x100 (Crodden, Groves, Reah & Martin) and 4x400m (Groves, Holden, Crodden & Waring) while the men just fielded the 4x400m (Bolland, Dart, Sagar & Aspindle).

Well done to the whole team a great effort by all and maybe we may get some nicer weather for the next meeting. As always a huge thank you to all the officials who helped out from the club!

Onto the next one!
