The time of year arrived for the annual trip to the Dorothy Hyman Stadium in Cudworth for the Yorkshire County Track & Field Championships. This year’s championships had an added positive that the club had more entrants into the Championships than in recent history and possibly club history.
After a remarkable season last year, Millie Rhodes moved up to the Under 17 Women’s age group and was straight back into her stride with a victory in her 300m heat qualifying as first overall after a Season’s Best (SB) time. Being the fastest qualifier to the final didn’t unnerve her as she went on to claim the gold medal after running a new Personal Best (PB) time to earn the County Champion title. On day two it was another victory in the heats with a PB time for Millie to qualify for the Under 17 Women’s 200m final. In a hard fought race Millie battled all the way to earn the silver medal to add to her collection.
In the Under 20 Women, Olivia Myers improved her Triple Jump medal colour from last year’s championships as she finished victorious, jumping to a Seasons Best distance and the county champion title. It would also be a SB distance in the Long Jump where it was a fourth place finish for Olivia.
Seb Bartocha was our third athlete to claim the ranks of county champion as he threw his way to victory in the under 20 Men Javelin, throwing his second best distance of the season.
On the track, Molly Waring was back to hurdling action as she claimed herself the Senior Women’s 100m Hurdles silver medal in a Season’s Best time and continued the success with a bronze medal in the 400m hurdles.
It was a busy schedule for Glenn Aspindle who finished day one off with a bronze medal in the Senior Men’s Javelin, achieving a SB distance. Earlier in day one it was a fourth place finish for Glenn in the Pole Vault. Day two started with more medal success as Glenn leapt to a silver medal in the High Jump with a SB jump which was fractions away from a new PB. Later on in day two it was a big PB throw in the Shot Putt for a fourth place finish.
Also in the Shot Putt, Ethan Williams threw his way to a second place finish in Under 20 Mens age group with a PB throw. It was another PB throw in the Discus that lead to a bronze medal finish to back up his Shot Putt silver.
In the Senior Women’s Pole Vault, Siobhan Maskill vaulted to an equal Personal Best height to achieve the silver medal on her first championship appearance.
Harry Rogerson also competed in the championships for the first time and earnt himself a silver medal in the Under 17 Men’s Hammer Throw with a SB throw.
George Thompson was also in his first championship action and leapt to a Personal Best distance in the Long Jump to gain himself a silver medal in the Under 15 boys Long Jump.
Continuing with the jumps, Amaya Brierley wasn’t missing out on the PB action as she earnt a new PB in the Under 13 Girls High Jump which achieved her a silver medal finish.
Kieran Hird had the busiest weekend of all Spen athletes as he achieved a new PB height in the Under 13 Boy’s High Jump which resulted in a bronze medal finish. In the 100m it was a victory in his heat that secured a position in the final being fourth quickest qualifier after a SB run, which would be backed up with a fourth place finish in the final. Followed by a PB throw in the Shot Putt for a sixth place finish as well as a tenth place finish in the Long Jump.
In the Under 17 Men, Robert Harness raced his way to a fifth place finish in the 800m heats which wasn’t enough to progress to the final but was a PB time to be proud of. Another PB followed in the 400m straight final finishing sixth place overall.
Over to the Under 15 Boy’s High Jump where Joshua Reed leapt to his second highest height of the year to finish in fifth place.
In the Senior Women’s sprints, Isabel White ran a SB time to finish fourth in her 200m heat to earn a place in the final where she knocked even more off her SB time to finish sixth overall. On day two it was another SB time in the 100m after finishing fourth in her heat and progressing to the final as seventh quickest which she improved to a sixth place finish in the final.
Aidan Rhodes made his championship debut as he threw himself a new PB in the Under 13 Boy’s Shot Putt, finishing in seventh place.
Kieran O’Brien battled a clashed schedule Pole Vaulting to an eight place finish in the Senior Men’s age group, before rushing straight over to a packed Senior Men’s Discus competition where a SB distance landed him in eleventh place.
Hannah Whitaker also made her championship debut in the Under 15 Girls 200m running a Season’s Best time to finish in fifteenth overall.
A thank you to all the organisers of the Championships, helpers and photographers and well done to all the Spenborough officials and volunteers who helped support the event.
