A rewind filled with fantastic results, medals and PB's galore for Spenborough Athletes.

A short rewind to the start of the month where we hosted our annual Track and Field meeting with the Spring Open meeting. Wind and rain threatened the day early doors, but thankfully we had a peak into the spring weather as they day stayed mostly dry with a slither of sun.

We had a fantastic turnout from Spenborough athletes with 44 competing, 14 of which were competing for their first time! So, without further ado (and without making this report any longer than it will be), let’s get into the action!

The senior men saw Glenn Aspindle get his outdoor season off to a good start with a gold medal in both the Javelin and the Pole Vault, along with a gold in the Long Jump with a season’s best jump and rounding it off with a silver in the 100m. Kieran O’Brien threw his way to a bronze medal in the Senior Men’s Shot Putt and back it up with a Personal Best (PB) throw in the Javelin. Connor Bell started his 2024 season with Season’s Best (SB) throw in both the Hammer and Shot Putt.

In the Senior Women, Molly Waring powered to gold in the 200m, with Isabel White claiming the silver medal. Isabel also went on to host her own impressive display with a gold medal in the 100m. Natalie Groves earnt herself a bronze medal in the 200m and went on to finish the day with a gold of her own in the 400m. Summer Haynes made the move up to the Senior category and finished victorious in the Pole Vault in her first ever try in competition, before also earning a silver in the 400m and finishing 4th in the 200m.

In the Under 20 Men’s, Elliot Hoyland vaulted himself into the gold medal position as he finished first in the Pole Vault, also on his first ever try in competition.

It was a medal filled day for Emily Sharp in the U20 Women, earning herself a silver medal in the 800m, a bronze in the Javelin Throw as well as a bronze in the Long Jump, just 1cm away from an equal PB. Estelle Williams also joined in on the medal haul with a silver medal and SB jump in Long Jump before earning a bronze in the 200m and a 4th place finish in the 400m.

Onto the Under 17 Men, where William McIntosh ran a SB in the 200m to finish with a silver medal, the form continued as he earnt a bronze in the 800m and rounded his day off perfectly with a gold in the 400m. Ben Whitaker leapt his way to gold in the Long Jump before running a SB in the 200m and also competing in the 100m. Ethan Williams launched the Shot Putt to a PB and gold medal distance, as well as a first competition try at the Javelin finishing 4th place. Seb Bartocha claimed the bronze medal in the Javelin, backed up with a PB run in the 200m and a 4th place in the 100m. Robert Harness improved his 800m PB time as he finished with a well earnt silver medal. Joseph Trevett competed for the first time and his explosive display in the 100m earnt a second-place finish and silver medal.

Olivia Myers started her day off with a bronze in the Under 17 Women’s Hammer before a flying to a gold medal in the Long Jump and a first-place finish in her 100m race. Abigail Lane started with a Seasons Best run in the 200m and an impressive run in the 100m to finish second in her race and a second-best distance of the year in the Long Jump.

Lawrence Carr excelled in the Under 15 Boy’s claiming a first-place finish in the Shot Putt, a PB and a gold medal followed in the High Jump and topped off with a PB and gold in the Long Jump. Reece Bridgeman had a strong day finishing with new PB’s in both of the 100m and the Long Jump. Harry Rogerson launched his Javelin to a PB distance and earnt a gold medal in the process. Arjun Pahal competed for the first time earning a bronze medal in the 800m, a silver medal in the Javelin and finished third in his 100m race. Jack Worsnup had a strong run in the 800m finishing with a new Personal Best time. George Thompson leapt to a new PB height in the High Jump, had an impressive third place finishes in his 200m and 100m races. Joel Cousins competed for the first time setting strong PB’s in the 100m and 200m and leaping to a 4th place finish in the High Jump.

Millie Rhodes started with the strength from last season, earning a gold medal in the 100m and 200m whilst running a PB in the 100m whilst also taking part in the Long Jump during the day. We had three Under 15 girls competing for the first time, with Poppy Nuttman having an excellent run in the 800m to set a strong PB and 4th finish, before leaping to a silver medal in the High Jump and also competing in the Long Jump. Poppy Watts impressed as she set a strong PB time in the 200m and flew across the sand pit in the Long Jump. Ada Tillotson sprinted her way down the 100m straight to finish in an impressive joint third finish in her race.

The Under 13 boy’s saw Kieran Hird calmly make his way to victory in the 200m and claiming the gold medal, before later earning a second-place finish in the 800m on top of also competing in the Long Jump. Isaac Hermann competed for the first time and paced his way round nicely to a bronze medal in the 800m.

Eva Armitage had a great day achieving a PB in each of the three events she competed in, whilst picking up a silver medal in the 150m and 600m and finishing with a bronze in the 75m. Hannah Whitaker achieved a well earnt gold medal with a PB time in the 75m, as well as a silver medal with another PB time in the 150m, finished with silver in the Long Jump. Lucy Hird moved up to the Under 13’s and ran a Season’s Best time in the 75m, jumped to a PB height in the High Jump and a second best of the season in the Long Jump. Maria Edwards competed for the first time with an electric run in the 150m and a strong run in the 600m to finish in 4th place.

In the Under 11 Boy’s Aidan Rhodes progressed his previous seasons results by gaining a PB in the 75m, Long Jump and Shot Putt whilst gaining a silver medal in the Shot Putt. Raess Muftee also returned to improve his 75m time with a PB time and earning a bronze medal, before leaping his way to a silver in the Long Jump as well as competing in the 150m. We had four Under 11 boys competing for the first time, with John Moore finishing with two silver medals from the 150m and 75m, finishing first in his race in the 75m, also trying the Long Jump. Arlo Parks powered his way to a bronze medal in the 150m and silver medal in the 600m in addition to winning his race in the 75m. Joshua Myers showed his determination in the 600m finishing with a bronze medal, only to be later backed up with a bronze in the Long Jump and a strong run in the 75m. Luca Hermann displayed his speed as he sprinted down the home straight in the 75m finishing second in his race.

We had three Under 11 girls who all competed for the first time, Stella Zurek hauled in three bronze medals as her talents shone in the 75m, 600m and the Long Jump. Rebecca Walsh was like lightning in the 75m as she finished third in her race, an impressive run in the 600m and turned her hand to the Long Jump all in her first competition. Connie Walker was also competing for the first time and achieved a strong 4th place finish in the 600m, along with attempting the shorter distance of the 75m and the 150m.

A day of fantastic results which could not happen without the incredible work of all the volunteers whose hard work goes towards making sure the event can go ahead and make sure everything runs smoothly. Thank you to everyone who gave up their time and helped with the event!
