The new season for the YDL Upper began with a comfortable fifth place finish!

The first YDL Upper of the season saw the team travelling to Spinkhill on thankfully a bit of a warmer day than the YDL Lowers had. The team had more athletes than the first YDL last year which was promising to see.

Starting with the under 20’s, Ben Wilson Started his new season off with a good performance claiming a first in the 100 metres and triple jump as well as a second in the long jump as well as a strong run in the 200 metres to claim a fourth place finish. First timer to the YDL Ben Maddocks started his athletics career with a comfortable win in the 400 metre hurdles along with a third place in the 400 metres and a second in the javelin. Jacob Pollard returned to the team for another year with a first place in the long jump accompanied by two fourth place finishes after good runs in the 100 and 200 metres. Jacob also ‘jogged’ round the 400 metres as he was instructed and made sure he enjoyed himself as he made his way round, chatting to the officials at the side of the track to finally cross the line reaching three figures in seconds of time (must be close to a personal best). In the throws Connor Bell chucked his way to a second place in the discus as well as impressive throws in both the shot putt and javelin, unfortunately no hammer for him to take part in today, maybe next time.

The same problem for Charlotte Bell in the under 20 women, leaving her with three of the four throws. This wasn’t going to stop her claiming a great set of results in some tightly contested throwing to pick up good point for team Spen. Also in the under 20’s Molly Waring claim victory in both the 400 metre hurdles as well as the sprint 100 metre hurdles. She wasn’t going to stop there and finished her day with a victory in the 200 metres as well with breathing space on the opposition.

To the under 17 men where Daniel Smith ran an impressive race to just miss out on first place in the 400 metres on top of scoring good points for the team in the shot putt which isn’t a regular event for him. Joining Dan in the under 17’s, Tyler Cossins made his season debut with a great set of results in the 100 and 200 metres as well as in the long jump all scoring good points for the team.

Onto the under 17 women where Natalie Groves and Ellie Holden joined the Upper team for the first time after moving up an age group. Neither of them let the move intimidate them with Natalie Claiming second in the 200 metres and third in the 300 metres followed by a fourth in the javelin, while Ellie picked up a third in the 300 metres and held of the competition to finish fourth in the 800 metres. Also on the track Mia Butler ran her way to a fourth place finish in the 3,000 metres (thankfully there wasn’t a steeplechase in the way for her to run into this year). Mia also ran a strong race in the 100 metres and picked up a third place in the javelin. Olivia Reah dominated the jumps with convincing wins in both the triple and long jump as well as having a chuck in the shot putt to get points for the team.

We had two relay teams both running as under 20 teams, the men’s consisting of Cossins, Pollard, Maddocks and Wilson who successfully navigated the baton round. The women’s team consisting of Holden, Waring, Reah and Groves who just missed out on first place in a tight finish on the line.
Well done to all the athletes who took part, great performances from all which hopefully can be built on throughout the season.

A big thank you as always to our wonderful officials team, this year we gain points from fielding officials which we gain full points from our wonderful same set of officials who help at every club meet.
