Yorkshire Cross Country Championships - 04/01/14

posted 25 Aug 2014, 13:17 by Spen A.C.   [ updated 19 Jan 2015, 14:37 ]
Despite the recent wet weather good conditions greeted the Spenborough runners who took part in the Yorkshire Cross Country Championships at Lightwater Valley on Saturday.
Three outstanding performances came in the junior under 20 races. Emma Wilkinson's 10th and 4th junior places in the combined senior/junior women's race was a terrific run. Emma was running with athletes who have represented England in European and world championships and will be greatly encouraged by her performance.
In the men's under 20 race Liam Steadman was 5th and Paul Davis finished 8th. Emma, Liam and Paul will represent Yorkshire in the Inter Counties race next month.
Joshua Woodcock-Shaw, who would be one of the youngest seniors in the race, lead the Spen senior men to a fine 13th team position (12th 'A' team) of 26 (22 'A's') teams. Joshua finished in 27th place and was followed by veteran stalwarts Kevin Ogden 53rd and Neil Barker 85th. Simon Bolland, who is another very young senior, was 100th and Tom Dart, in his first cross country race, 135th. Gerrard Skipping was 146th.
The race was won by Hallamshire runner Andrew Hayes. The winner's time of nearly 41 minutes was nearly eight minutes longer than last year's winning time and even taking into consideration the softer conditions the courses were up to a mile longer than last year.
Debbie Gatland and Lisa Dowson ran in the senior women's race finishing 139th and 146th.
Tobin Rhodes was 34th in the under 15 boy's race and Alice Cooper 51st in the under 13 girls race.
Many of the runners rounded off their cross country season with this event and will hopefully have enjoyed the challenge and be encouraged by some good to outstanding performances to continue into the on/off road and track season and warmer and maybe dryer weather.
