Spenborough made a good start in the first West Yorkshire Cross Country League races of the season at Thornes Park, Wakefield on Sunday 18th October.

There was a fantastic turn of eighteen junior and senior men from our club in the senior race and with six to score we placed eight of the fourteen teams. Following his good run in the York 10 miles race last week Joe Sagar led the team in seventh place. Joe ran with the leading group for much of the race but the hills of Thornes Park and the fast pace gradually broke the group up. Joe was followed by Kevin Ogden (25th), Martin Hall, who was first veteran over 55 in a fine 46th position, Paul Davis (50th), Neil Barker (56th) and Gerard Skipping (78th). Other Spen runners were Edward Revell (79th), Anthony Bradford (83rd), Ian Wilson (86th), Darren Twigg (90th), Ian Ogden (116th), Darren Wake (118th), Dave Butler (131st), Stephen Hunt (138th), Lee Dolman (141st), Rob Chaplin (154th), Grant Cooper (158th) and Mick Dransfield (161st). The race was won by Philip Seseman from the Blackheath club in London running as a guest and former Spen runner, now running for Leeds City, Josh Woodcock-Shaw was second.

Jenni Muston led the Spenborough runners in the women's race in 23rd place. Other senior women were Natasha Greere (40th) and Emma McGuire (73rd).

There were some good runs from the younger athletes. Tobin Rhodes finished twelfth in the under seventeen men's race and Courtney Benson placed twenty fourth in the under seventeen women's race. In the under fifteen girl's race Molly Warring (29th), Alice Cooper (31st) and Lydia Hall (40th) placed eight team Other Spen runners in the under 15 race were Sienna Hayes (41st) and Alicia Rose (43rd). Nickolas Brackenridge (33rd) and his brother Harry (16th) were the only Spen runner in the under fifteen and thirteen boy's races. There was another Spen team in the under thirteen girl's race with Olivia Reah (43rd), Summer Haynes (45th) and Mia Butler (64th) finishing 9th team. The first races of the day saw Jack Barraclough (48th) and James Bell (63rd) run in the under eleven boy's and Molly Firth place 16th in under eleven girl's. race.
