West Yorkshire Cross Country

Spenborough Athletics Club runners made a good start in the first West Yorkshire Cross Country League races of the season at Thornes Park, Wakefield on Sunday 19th October. There was a good turn-out of fifteen junior and seventeen senior athletes on a sunny, breezy afternoon. 

The senior men were placed fifth of the sixteen teams. Kevin Ogden led them in eleventh place and was followed by Simon Bolland (19th), Paul Davis (28th), Martin Peck (53rd), Gerard Skipping (56th) and Martin Hall (67th). Other senior men to finish were Ian Ogden (80th), Ian Wilson (87th), Dave Butler (114th), Rob Moon (130th) and Lee Dolman (134th). The race was won by Simon Deakin from Leeds and he led Leeds City to team victory.

Not to be outperformed by the men the women's team also finished in fifth place. Natasha Greere placed 36th with Emma McGuire (46th), Kirsty Moon (50th) and Stephanie McKintosh (59th) also making up the team. Other senior women were Sarah Barker (67th) and Jackie Carter (71st). The race was won by Claire Duck from Leeds with Holmfirth taking the team victory.

There were some good runs from the younger athletes. Tobin Rhodes finished eighth and Henry Carter thirty second in the under seventeen men's race. Georgia Calvert-Smith placed sixteenth in the under seventeen women's race while Courtney Benson was fouteenth in the under fifteen girl's race. Courtney led the girls, Lydia Hall (39th) and Alice Cooper (41st), to a ninth team place. Nickolas Brackenridge (37th) and Ben Moon (53rd) ran in the under fifteen boy's race and Nickolas' brother Harry was the only Spen runner in the under thirteen boy's race finishing 45th. Olivia Reah (47th) and Mia Butler (72nd) ran in the under thirteen girl's race. The first race of the day saw Esa Azam finish 5th in the under eleven boy's race leading Jack Quinn (32nd) and Jack Barraclough (61st) to ninth team place. The highest individual placed Spenborough athlete was Natalie Groves who was fourth in the under eleven girl's race.
