Spenborough athletes sealed promotion to division two of the Northern Athletics League with a comfortable win at The Princess Mary Stadium on Saturday 8th August. Once again it was in the field events where the Spenborough athletes excelled. Rosa McKie and Emma Rawnsley dominated the jumping events with 'A' and 'B' wins in the high, triple and long jumps. Nick Crimmen won the shot putt and came second in the discus while Glenn Aspindle, looking in good form to make his debut in the Yorkshire decathalon title at the end of the month, won the javelin, pole vault and 400 meter hurdles. The warm conditions were challenging to the distance runners but veteran Kevin Ogden used his experience to catch the early leader and win the 5000 meters. Twin brother Ian won the 'B' race. Distance runner Tom Dart had a fine debut in the 1500 meters coming second. However the 'tough of the track' awards must go to Simon Cragg and James Khan who more than endured the 3K steeple chase. The youngest athlete in the team Courtney Benson gained valuable points for the team winning the 'B' 800 and finishing second in the 3000m. Spenborough's sprinters made a valuable contribution with Isaac Kitchen-Smith and Ciara Flannery, both on leave from university, finishing second and first in the men's 100 meters and women's 200 meters respectively. But praise also to Darren Twigg and Jason Newall for facing the fast men in the sprints. Spenborough finished second to Trafford in the final league table and look forward to competing in the higher league next summer.
