Yorkshire Vets Road Relays – 21/06/14

Scenic Roberts Park in Saltaire, Bradford was the venue for this year’s Yorkshire Vets Road Relay Championship with clubs from across the region competing in the various age categories from 35 years upwards. Situated in the heart of Britain’s industrial revolution it was appropriate then that there were so many workmanlike performances on display.
For the first time in several years, Spenborough and District AC fielded a total of six teams, three women’s and three men’s.
The vet 35 males (Lee Dolman19:56, Stuart Symons 17:50, Tony Bromley 17:06, John Turpin 16:08) finished in a creditable 4th place whilst the Vet 50 males finished 7th in their age group (Edward Wilkinson 19:09, Michael Dransfield 18:36 and Keith McGhie 16:06) .
There were strong showings in the female groups too. In the vet 35 category, Spen entered two teams who finished 8th (Sam Boryslawsky 19:52, Claire Thompson 21:05, Kirsty Moon 20:07) and 18th (Tracey Wake 28:07, Debbie Gatland 24:05, Stephanie McIntosh 21:25) with Tracey making her debut in a Spen vest.  The Vet 45 ladies completed proceedings finishing 5th in the age group (Elizabeth Bottomley 22:05, Amanda Pearson 28:28, Jackie Carter 22:34)
Spen’s only silverware of the day came from the men’s Vet 40 team (Neil Barker 15:53, Ian Ogden 16:29, Gerard Skippins 15:30, Kevin Ogden 14:10) who romped to victory with 45 seconds to spare over local rivals Holmfirth Harriers in second and 2min 30 secs ahead of 3rd placed Halifax Harriers.

Race report from Jackie Carter......

Once again June is upon us with the club invitation to the Joe Percy 10k road race. This is a closed race over a two lap, undulating course around Farnley Tyas.

Around nine local teams competed for the winner's trophy with 2nd and 3rd getting mementoes.
We had ideal conditions on the night & we very nearly had 3 full teams out, but ended up with a respectable 25 completing the course.

First home was Kevin Ogden winning the race outright by nearly a minute to spare. Tom Dart, Joshua Woodcock-Shaw, and Gerard Skippins were all also in the first ten. Approximately 12 Spen athletes made their course debut: Tony Bromley, Simon Jackson, Ian Wilson, Dave Butler, Lisa Dowson, Debbie Gatland, Susan Jackson, Johnny Turpin, Josh Woodcock-Shaw, Lee Dolman and Henry Carter; who has been our Team scorer at the finish in previous years, but now had graduated to being old enough to run it! Looks like I need a new scorer!  Thanks to Mia Butler for scoring on the night.

Our hard efforts paid off with the third team prize this year, missing out on 2nd by 2 points. Last year we received 4th team prize, missing out by 3 points. However, things are looking good for next year!

Thanks to everyone for turning out!
