West Yorkshire Champs & Yorkshire Combined

There was a busy weekend of athletics at the Princess Mary Athletics Stadium when the West Yorkshire Athletics Championships and the Yorkshire Combined Athletics Championships were held. There were testing conditions for athletes and officials on Saturday with continuous rain and cool temperatures while Sunday the day was sunny and mild. Spenborough athletes had success with some sensational sprinting from under 20 athlete Leon Greenwood who won the West Yorkshire 200 meters in a time of 22.01 seconds which is a national standard grade one. Leon also won the 400 meters in 50.54 seconds. Simon Bolland won the West Yorkshire under 20 men's 1500 meters. In the Combined Events Championships Spenborough athletes Glenn Aspindle and Caius Lee finished first and second respectively in the under 17 men's Octathalon that involves competing in eight events over two days. Both athletes are multi talented taking part in a various events from throwing the javelin to running 1500 meters. Glenn is the West Yorkshire League Champion making him the best overall under 17 male athlete this season with Caius finishing eigth. Other under seventeen men competing were James Anthony who was 3rd in the 800 meters and Tobin Rhodes finishing 4th in the 1500 meters. Another Spenborough athlete in winning ways is under eleven athlete Natalie Groves. Natalie won the West Yorkshire 75, 150 and 600 meter races this weekend and finished third overall athlete in her age group. Not to be outdone by the girls under eleven boy Jack Quinn competed in the 75, 600 meters and long jump finishing 7th in all of them! Under 13 boy Kahlan Lee competed in the triatholon that involved the shot putt, long jump and 80 meters finishing 6th. For many athletes this is their final competition of the season but after a short break they will have opportunities to compete indoors during the winter while the distance runners will have cross country and road races to compete in.
