What a turn around for Spenborough's senior athletes in the Northern Athletics league at Halifax on Sunday. After finishing fifth in the last league fixture and looking to avoid relegation the athletes turned out in force to win the match by one point from East Cheshire with Halifax just nine points behind in third. Ciara Flannery and Sasha Craig dominated the women's sprints winning the 100 and 200 meter 'A' and 'B' races while Leon Greenwood won the men's the 200 meters and the 'B' 100. While the women finished second in the 4 x 100 meters and 4 x 400 meters relays Leon anchored the men to victory in the final event of the afternoon the men's 4 x 400 meters relay. That win secured the match victory for Spenborough by one point after 37 events. There were strong performances from Spenborough's throwers with Chelsea Mitchell winning the women's shot and Nick Crimmen winning the men's shot. Eliot Griffin won the 'A' hammer throw with Nick winning the 'B' event. Spenborough's distance runners put in some good performances. Mollie Flannery won the women's 'B' 800 meters and Ryan Dransfield won the men's 'B' 800 meters. There were second places from James Anthony in the men's 800 'A' race, Becky Rowlands in the women's 800 'A' race, Joshua Woodcock-Shaw and Simon Bolland in the men's 1500 meters 'A' and 'B' races respectively and Kevin Ogden in the men's 5000 meters. Points were gained by athletes stepping into events they are not familiar with notably team manager Amanda Pearson gaining four valuable points in the women's 1500 meters and Chloe McCalskey making a rare Spenborough appearance in the sprint hurdles, finishing 2nd in the women's 100 m hurdles. Emma Rawnsley was the busiest athlete competing in five events with her best performance coming in the 'A' 400 meters where she finished 2nd. The fourth and final fixture is at Warrington on Saturday 9th August.
