Spen 20 Race Review & Results

posted 16 Mar 2015, 10:54 by Spen A.C.   [ updated 14 Sep 2015, 13:18 ]

Spenborough Athletics Club staged our annual 20 miles road race on Sunday 15th March. Starting and finishing on the Princess Mary Stadium track the route goes through Scholes, Clifton, Hartshead and Roberttown.

The race incorporates the Yorkshire men and women's championship with runners from Yorkshire and further away taking part. A big thank you to all of the marshalls and officials who helped make the event a success.

163 men finished the race and there was a good turn out from Spenborough Athletics Club runners led home by evergreen Kevin Ogden who finished 8th in 2 hours 04 mins 13 secs. There was a good race between Tom Dart and Martin Hall with Tom (11th in 2h 06 07) getting the better of Martin (14th 2h 06 33). The other Spen runners who took part were: Neil Barker (41st 2h 15 45)), Ian Ogden (58th 2h 22 06), John Turpin (59th 2h 22 14), Oliver Carter (63rd 2h 24 37), Gerard Skippings (65th 2h 25 04), Anthony Bradford (68th 2h 26 49), Tony Bromley (99th 2h 36 02), Andrew Croughan (107th 2h 38 33), Robert Moon (126th 2h 43 25), Alex Boryslawsky (127th 2h 43 46) and Darren Twigg (154th 2h 54 50) I am sure this is by far the most Spen runners in this race.

60 women finished the run including five women from Spenborough led in by Hazel Pike in 21st place (147th place overall) in a time of 2 hours 51mins 2secs. Hazel was followed by Samantha Boryslawsky (22nd 2h 53 08), Claire Thompson (41st 3h 14 07), Kirsty Moon (42nd 3h 14 09) and Elizabeth Bottomley (44th 2h 15 22).

First woman across the finish line and the Yorkshire champion was Shona Fletcher from Richmond & Zetland Athletics Club in a time of 2hrs 6mins 26secs and the first man and Yorkshire champion was John Hobbs from the Valley Striders club in Leeds in 1hr 59mins 30secs.

England Athletics Indoor Championships

Spenborough's Ashton Greenwood won the England Athletics under 17 women's 300 metres indoor championship at the English Institute of Sport at Sheffield on Saturday. Ashton won her heat to qualify for the final and then ran the lap and a half of the indoor track in 40.06 seconds to win the race comfortably in a personal best time. This is Ashton's first national title to go with the North of England title at 300 metres she won at the same venue in January.

National Cross Country

Spenborough's Josh Woodcock-Shaw gave one of the best cross country performances by a Spen athlete in the senior men's National Cross Country race at very muddy Hampstead Heath in London on Saturday 21st February. Josh finished 52nd of over 2000 runners and he was less than 3 minutes behind the winner Charlie Hulson from Sale. Four other senior men from Spenborough took part with Simon Bolland finishing 567th, Mark Leggett 1010th, Stephen Hunt 1412th and Ian Ogden 1685th. In the under 20men's race Spenborough were led in by Liam Stedman in 98th followed by Paul Davis 126th and James Anthony 159th. Tobin Rhodes was 123rd in the under 17 men's race and Natasha Geere was 309th in the senior women's race.

As far as I am aware this is the third highest place by a senior man from Spenborough in the National. Lee Warburton finished 44th in the 1994 National at Parliament Hill and Jeff Hornby finished 37th in 1994 at South Shields.

North of England Cross Country

posted 30 Jan 2015, 14:15 by Spen A.C.   [ updated 17 Mar 2015, 12:16 ]

Spenborough Athletics Club's senior men's team finished of what has been their best cross country season in recent years by placing 43rd of the 58 teams in the North of England Cross Country Championships at Pontefract race course on Saturday.

While not at full strength all of the runners performed well with Kevin Ogden leading them in finishing 130th of the 700 runners. In his first year as a senior Simon Bolland set himself up for good runs in the future with an encouraging 218th position. Other Spenborough runners were Gerard Skippins (356th), Ian Ogden (445th), Lee Dolman (599th) and Mick Dransfield (624th). The race was won by Andrew Davies from Stockport with Olympic Triathlete Champion Alistair Brownlee finishing second.

In the senior women's race Natasha Geere finished 121st of the 342 finishers and Paul Davis was 40th of the 69 finishers in the very competitive men's under 20 race.

Spen Open Cross Country

Thank you officials and cross country runners who came on Saturday (17/01/15)  to help and/or compete in the sleet, rain and very cold conditions at our Open Cross Country races. This is the first time for many years that we have held theses races and the first time at this venue. While we expected and hoped for more entries in the end there were reasonable numbers in some of the events particularly the under 11's and senior men. The event will be discussed at the next committee meeting on 6th February when a decision will be made whether to hold the races again next year. My initial thoughts are that we should hold the event again and look at improving the pre event publicity, marking the course and shortening the timetable among other matters.

Results from the races can be found here.

As regards to the races a small but keen field of runners contested the final race of the day, the senior men's race. Nick Hooker from Leeds City Athletics Club and Spenborough's Kevin Ogden took the lead in the early stages with Nick eventually pulling away from Kevin to win by over a minute. Kevin had the satisfaction of leading Spenborough to a team victory with Tom Dart (4th), and our European Veteran 800 metre champion Keith McGhie (7th), making up the team. Other Spenborough runners were John Turpin (9th), Paul Bolland (10th), Darren Wake (11th), Dave Butler (13th), Lee Dolman (14th) and Grant Cooper (16th).

Spenborough's Sarah Barker, Jackie Carter and Sharon Cooper took the women's team prize in a race won by Jaqui Khoueiry from Holmfirth. Some of the senior runners provided help before and after their event and my special thanks to them.

In the younger age races there were wins for Tobin Rhodes in a good quality 17 men's race and Courtney Benson who had a strong finish to lead in the under 15 girls.  Courtney led Molly Waring and Alice Cooper to the girl's team prize. All credit to Olivia Reah, Alicia Rose and Mia Butler who were the only runners in the under 13 girl's race. Other young Spenborough runners were Nicholas Brackenridge who finished 4th in the under 15 boy's race, Jack Quinn (6th), James Bell (8th) and Jack Barraclough (12th) in the under 11 boy's race and Molly Briggs (12th) in the under 11 girl's race.
